Fuji Not Your Grandma’s Mountain About two weeks ago, not too long after my 21st birthday, I climbed Mt. Fuji. I have to preface this story with a couple facts: 1) I am not a mountain climber in any form, shape, or capacity. I hike occasionally but the last full mountain I climbed was in 4th grade, when it was compulsory, and shortly after I wiped the sweat from my brow, re-Velcroed my shoes and vowed never again. 2) For some reason, I have been wanting to climb Mt. Fuji for the past few months, maybe because I dont know when I will be in Japan next (and its only open two months out of the year), maybe because you can buy a cool stick that they brand at every station on the way up, but not for a particular reason any more palpable than the stick. 3) About two weeks ago, not too long after my 21st birthday, when I climbed Mt. Fuji, it was raining torrentially with gale force winds and 4) the guys we climbed with were my friend Chris 10s friends, whom I had never met before and he had met on Sunday, and they were hard . core. Oh, and 5) I did not know or fully realize all these facts until I was about halfway up the mountain, legs and throat on fire, clothes soaked through to my underwear, and ready to throw in the really, really wet towel I was wearing around my head. Here are some other facts that I didnt know thanks, Wikipedia: Mt. Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan at 3,776 m (12,388 ft). It is an active volcano and a well-known symbol of Japan that is frequently depicted in art and photographs, as well as visited by sightseers and climbers (okay, I kinda knew that part). The mountain is divided into stations; typically climbers will ascend from the 5th station to the 10th (the summit); as well as four main trails. Most climbers take the Fujinomiya trail to the extent that it becomes very crowded during climbing season, and there is a line to the summit past the 8th or 9th station but there are some other very steep and challenging trails, like the one we climbed. The one we climbed was called the Subashiri trail, which when I heard it I thought they were calling it the Samishii trail, or the Lonely Trail. Which made sense to me, because I was dead last in our group, and therefore pretty much climbed the damn thing myself. Oh, and its sunrise is supposed to be legen wait for it dary. Awe-inspiring. Epic. Life-changing. LEGENDARY. And so we started off at the fifth station, shortly after devouring bowls of chicken, eggs and rice, and buying a backpack cover that cost me my firstborn. Fuji may be a rather strenuous mountain to hike, but its also a tourist trap, even when its pitch black, windy, and wet a fact I was to be reminded of when our trail merged with the most popular trail after the 8th station. (FORESHADOWING!) There were five of us: Yasu, our insane driver and leader who had hiked two weeks ago when it was still snowing, Takuya, Yasus friend from his university who took hiking PE classes for fun, Alexis, Yasus other friend and my fellow inexperienced climber, Chris 10, whos in pretty good shape, and me, who used to run like a 20 minute mile in school and probably still does. We left at about 9 or 9:30 PM. The plan was to hike all night to see the sunrise at 4:30 AM, hang around at the top for seven hours or so, then watch the eclipse from the highest point in Japan at 11:30. Then we would head back down and hit up an onsen (hot springs) at the base of the mountain. It seemed flawless except for the weather, but there was no other night to do it because eclipses wait for no man. So we set off onto the dark and rainy path, Yasu and Takuya in their hardcore hiking gear, and Chris 10 and I in really cheap rain suits wed bought from a Walmart-like place near our work for $20. (FORESHADOWING!) It wasnt too bad at first. But then it started getting harder. And harder. And harder. There is something truly to be said about the masochism of MIT students, and as I was dragging myself up the tree-shrouded path between the 5th and 6th stations in the pouring rain, the main thought that crossed my mind was how am I going to blog about this later?? And then it came to me: with a hugely cliched metaphor! Kids, climbing Fuji is like going through MIT in a lot of ways. You have no idea what youre about to put yourself through and in some ways, this makes it easier, since I couldnt see behind me or in front of me any further than where I was stepping. Youre tired a lot of the time. You think if I could just make it through to the next station, I can chill out for a little bit.. but youre glad your friends are there with you. You dont sleep. And youre sweaty a lot of the time. Maybe thats just me. Anyway. We eventually made it up to the sixth station, which we thought was the seventh station because it took us more than an hour to get there from the fifth station. It was probably the longest distance between any two stations, and it took even longer because we kept stopping on the way to reflect on the beautiful view of Japan below us. Not long after the sixth station it looked like we were about to reach another station, but we didnt. Because they had this terrible thing called Old Xth Station in between every station to make you think you were reaching another station, but you werent. This is why when Yasu, Chris, and Alexis reached the Old 6th Station about a minute before Takuya (who was kind enough to wait for me) and I did, I heard Alexis yell, nooooOOOOOOOOO!!! We stopped briefly at the Old 6th station to reflect on the world below and also how much our thighs hurt, then traipsed on. The 7th station was not too far off, but I was starting to feel the fact that it was a little past 1 in the morning and that wed been hiking for about four hours straight at that point, so when we finally made it up to the 7th station I used my expertly honed-at-MIT abilities of being able to nap anywhere to promptly fall asleep. When I woke up I found the rain was now going sideways and underneath my $20 plastic bodysuit, and that most of my extremities were rapidly transforming from waterlogged to icelogged oh, how phase changes plague me even now, at 3,000 meters above sea level and really far away from thermodynamics and since the hut was closed, the only place for me to stand was inside the bathroom. Unfortunately, I didnt check the signs and about twenty seconds after I parked myself in the entrance, huddled against the side of the bathroom wall for warmth, a very large Japanese dude brushed past me and stormed into the urinal. Instead of a normal girl who hadnt been hiking up a mountain in the rain and wind who mightve taken this as their cue to leave, I took this as a good time to take another one minute nap. (Dont judge me. Especially since this was not my first time accidentally hanging out in a mens bathroom. What? Who said that?) Wed almost made it up to the 8th station and Id almost gotten that manly bathroom smell off me when the weather started to get really, really bad. Difficult to stand up, let alone walk, bad. So I dont think I am exaggerating too much when I tell you hiking up to each station began to look like the Pearly Gates: You can imagine our disappointment when we found that the 8th Station was nothing more than a closed hut with a bunch of lights and a huddled group of freezing hikers sucking on oxygen tanks. But despite its more irritating, earlier counterparts, the Old 8th Station was definitely my favorite. We stopped to get some of the best hot chocolate I have ever had in my life, probably because I was hallucinating hot springs everywhere at that point, and warmed up for a few minutes since we were a little ahead of schedule. From the Old 8th Station to the summit, and the time we spent to the summit, the weather was so bad that I couldnt take out my camera anymore, especially since my fingers wouldnt permit me. At this point, however, our trail merged with the most popular trail, which meant we started seeing more and more people. It was pretty surprising considering I was two minutes away from turning into a snowman and was sure no one else could be as crazy as we were, but as I said, Fuji is only open for two months out of the year, so any time during that two months you can be sure there will be people. Even if its pouring and a Tuesday night/Wednesday morning and a bunch of the huts are closed the moral of the story is that any day of the week, PEOPLE ARE CRAZY. It got so bad past the 9th Station that we were literally standing in line to get to the top of the mountain, right about the same time the weather decided to take a turn for the worse. For about an hour we stood in lines of tourists, feeling the rain slam down our necks, every now and then taking a step, every now and then getting blasted with an angry gust of wind. For about an hour I stood almost but not quite at the top, shivering and hating myself for doing this, wondering why I would ever put myself through this, what was I trying to prove, when this was ever going to end. I forgot to add that the majority of the time we wed been hiking, besides all the times I wasnt breathlessly trying to keep up with the guys or playing songs in my head over and over to keep my mind off things, I was counting the ways I was lucky. Lucky that I couldnt see anything because if I had been able to see how far up we were going, I probably wouldve turned around and gone home. (Alexis had headed back down shortly before the 7th station because of his fear of heights, and I knew at that point I had to keep going.) Lucky that I was so out of breath, because my body heat was keeping me from really feeling the cold most of the time. Lucky that I was so ridiculously unprepared and had no idea what was in store for me because that made it harder for me to psych myself out. Lucky that Takuya was nice enough to wait up for me, lucky that the wind kept me from getting too overheated, lucky that it was raining so I didnt have to get out my water bottle. (You ever hear that song? If allll the rain drops were lemon drops and gum drops..) But at this point, we had essentially stopped hiking, and Id really begun to feel the cold. I was no longer warmed by being sweaty or out of breath, and the plastic bags Id tied over my shoes (did I mention we were REALLY unprepared?) had torn completely off so that my socks were soaked through. In fact, everything I was wearing was completely soaked through my gloves, my sweatshirt, my fleece, my jeans, my hair oh, yes, ALL of my hair and I was reminded of particularly cold mornings in Cambridge when Id run to class late, of course just out of the shower, and my hair would freeze over or break off. I imagined the same thing happening to my fingers, one by one, like icicles that would be left on the ground to melt into Fujis rocks forever. And then Takuya, loyally trudging behind me in line, yelled 200 m to 10th station! Huh?? 200 m left! Yatta ne! We did it! I yelled, flailing my arms around and almost knocking Takuya back down the mountain. Those last 200 m were the longest of my life, but the sky had started to lighten as day began to break and I slowly began to feel lucky again. I looked up and started to see dozens of other hikers, all drudging slowly and patiently up to the peak, and I felt that same sense of warmth spread through my chest like when you find someone in the lounge up at 3 in the morning doing the same pset you are. Finally, FINALLY, we stumbled up the final stairs and jumped around the summit of Mt. Fuji, pumping our fists in victory and in the desperate hope that feeling might return to our fingers. Takuya and I had been long separated from Chris and Yasu at that point, so we wandered around for a bit trying to find them before succumbing to the internally heated temptation of the huts at the top. These huts sold ramen and curry and hot drinks at ridiculous prices and offered all the comforts of the mens bathroom at the 7th station without any of the smell. Except for the smell of VICTORY. (In case you were wondering, victory kinda smells like burned rice.) We didnt get to see the sunrise. The sky was too cloudy and it was still raining by 4:30, so there were no legendary skies for us, despite all extra grief wed been through to get there. And at around 7:30, one of the hut workers told us we were going to get altitude sickness if we stayed up there any longer and advised us to go down so we didnt get to see the eclipse, either. But the view on the way down was spectacular. Two weeks later back at sea level, Im not sure if it was worth it. It was worth it in the sense that I wanted to climb Mt. Fuji, and I wanted to prove I was just as hardcore as the boys I climbed with, and the view on the way down was really something else. It wasnt worth it in that I had really wanted to see the sunrise and the eclipse, but if I keep thinking about all the regrets I have about the things I have no control over Id miss out on the chance to think about how lucky we were especially since there were two climbers that went missing a few nights before we climbed Fuji. But we conquered Mt. Fuji, and now I feel like I can do anything. GREAT! my mom said, when Id finished telling her this story (not in so many words) over Skype. So now you can do it again when we get there? Uh, no.

A Thin Layer Of Fiction Are Looking Backward By Edward...

Throughout the years, literature has often been used as a means to spread social critique. When it unfavorable or even dangerous to publicly speak out against the society of the time, the written word can act as a shield. Adding a mask of fiction to these novels allows the author to get their message out to the public who otherwise would not take the time for such issues. Two novels that exemplify this social critique behind a thin layer of fiction are Looking Backward by Edward Bellamy and Herland by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Both of these novels offer a critique to certain aspects of American society during the time period, and do so in very similar ways. Each of these novels, Looking Backward and Herland, depict utopian societies in order to fully illustrate the issues that the authors see in their current society. Although the issues being addressed may be different, the way Bellamy and Gilman discuss them contain numerous parallels. Ranging from the cause of these utopian soci eties, to the mindset of the individuals living in them, both novels are very similar in their approach to social critique of America. Even the differences between the two are caused by common reasons. These parallels show the underlying format used by both Bellamy and Gilman that allowed them to identify the flaws in American society and offer solutions to them. As a member of the Bison baseball team, I’ve been very blessed to meet and play with a diverse group of guys. Over the first couple of months that I’ve been at OBU, however, I’ve noticed a barrier that student-athletes place between their team and other students. Generally, most student-athletes solely hang out with their teammates of the sport they play. Now it’s important for teammates to build chemistry with one another, but at the same time it causes a feeling of division among other students. The most effective way to solve this problem is by putting student-athletes in a position to feel unified with the rest of the university through activities that form and streng then relationships, student clubs and organizations, and groups that encourage growth in Christ. Over the course of a school year, student-athletes spend a majority or their time with their teammates. In offseason, they might spend an hour or so with their teammates, plus another hour or two in study hall with them. Abstract The purpose of this experiment was to determine the rate of photosynthesis in different concentrations of a Bicarbonate solution. My Hypothesis was that if you placed the spinach disks in the highest concentration of bicarbonate then that is where photosynthesis would happen the fastest. We cut out equal disk from a plant leaf and placed half in water and the other half a bicarbonate solution. We then used a syringe to carefully extract the bicarbonate solution, and then we removed the air out of the syringe and created a small vacuum within the syringe and later released the vacuum. This process was repeated until enough leaf disks’ air has been swapped with the solution and the leaf disks submerge into the solution. We repeated this method again with water instead of bicarbonate and put them under the same intensity of light. The results obtained by the experiment support my hypothesis; the solutions containing the higher concentrations of bicarbonate had faster rates of photosynthesis than those with less. As we look into photosynthesis we see that factors such as light intensity, different types of plants and concentration levels play a role in rate of photosynthesis (Spilatro 1998). We’ve set up this experiment to understand how different concentration levels of CO2 can affect the rate of photosynthesis, and I have hypothesized that in higher concentration level of a bicarbonate solution should yield a faster rate of photosynthesis. Methods In this experiment we used a hole punch to cut out several disk shape leaves from spinach. We then separated the disks into equal amounts and place one half into water and the other half in to a bicarbonate solution. We then used a syringe to carefully suck up some bicarbonate solution and remove the plunger end of the syringe, then put your finger on the other end of the syringe and then put the leaf pieces into the part of the syringe that you took out. Put the plunger back and flip the syringe upside down getting rid of the air. Encase the tip of the syringe with your finger and pull on the other end to create a vacuum, hold for a little bit and then let it go. Do this over until the air has been substituted solution and they sink into it. Reuse this method but instead of bicarbonate use water instead. Put the leaf disks into a beaker with bicarbonate and the other one with water and place them under the same light source. Discussion In my hypothesis I stated that the leaf disks placed in the beaker containing high concentration of bicarbonate would experience that highest rate of photosynthesis. The results obtained from this experiment support this hypothesis as the solution with the highest concentration over went photosynthesis the fastest out of all of the bicarbonate solution. The results strongly support my hypothesis as I notice a trend that was the rate of photosynthesis was fastest from highest concentration to lowest concentration so it wasn’t a coincidence that the results turned out the way it did. A problem I encounter while conducting this experiment was time management. The last solution took longer than forty plus minute so we did not include that solution with our results. Another problem I faced was trying to get large enough spinach to get better disk samples. Some sources of error would be due to the small size of the sample spinach, the leaf disks may have been punched to close to the leaf veins. And we weren’t certain how many disks were supposed to cut out to make sure we had enough testing materials. Things we could’ve done to make sure the experiment went smoothly was grab a larger sheet of tin foil to guarantee no light got in  and be more accurate when it came to timing the disks times.

The collisions between the electrons and the nuclei cause the electrons to move slower, this is called resistance. So, resistance is how hard it is for the electrons move through a wire material. The uncontrolled factors that will affect the resistance of the wire are: Firstly, temperature is a factor. If the wire is heated, the atoms will move around more because there will be an increase in energy. This would cause more collisions between the nuclei and the electrons. The increase in collisions would cause the resistance to rise. The temperature factor would be very hard to control, because the equipment needed to keep a constant temperature has not been given to us. So we will attempt to do this by being as quick as possible when taking the readings so as to have the same temperature throughout the experiment. Secondly, the thickness of the wire is a factor. The thickness of the wire will cause resistance to decrease because of the increase in space in the wire. The increase in space means that there is more space for the electrons to flow freely because there would be fewer collisions with atoms. Thirdly, the material used would be a factor. The Essentials of Timber and Tree Marking Symbols Timber marking symbols using paint and other tree scribing methods are not universally accepted in North American forests. There is no national code that mandates the use of painted slashes, dots, circles and Xs. There is no color used as a code that is more than a regional preference and usually accepted only locally. Even the United States Forest Service uses different marks and colors depending on the national forest and/or national forest region. However, there are many reasons to mark trees and forest timber. Trees may be marked to indicate a tree to be cut or left as per the forest management plan. Trees on forest boundary lines can be marked to indicate property ownership. Trees inside large forests can be permanently marked as part of a forest inventory system. Forest Tree Marking Meanings There are no national tree marking standards even if many of them are similar. Forestry organizations have tried for years to set a few guidelines for tree and timber marks. But foresters are an independent breed and many see their tree marking designs and system as their personal or company imprint or brand. Circles, number of slashes and other quick paint spurts, including stump marks, usually signifies cutting status along with the quality or grade of the tree marked. Boundary line colors often designate land belonging to a particular owner and usually painted over some removed bark (scars) to last longer. Marks Used in Selecting a Tree to Cut Selecting trees to cut is the most common mark made, often done using paint. Unmarked trees that are left usually have the best potential to make the most productive future second crop. The paint color is usually blue on trees to be cut and the trees intended product is identified by different paint slashes and symbols. The first story of Genesis is introduced to Ps vision and how the creation was. Throughout this story, God human creation was in the six day; also God created humans by his own image. In the other side there is the second story of Genesis which represents the Js vision of creation, based on this story human have different origin from the first story. In Genesis II God did not created man by his own image, it was created of the dust of the ground(Genesis 2:7). Comparing both stories there is a huge difference of power between the two Gods. Moreover these two creations show evidence in different styles of writing and have conflict with it. Both versions of Genesis have been contrasted, in the first story of Genesis, the order of creation differ from Genesis II. In Genesis I the heaven was first, then came animals, and finally was the man. But in the other hand, Genesis II human was placed on Earth before the animals and nature.(genesis 1:1, genesis 2.1) After those different versions is really difficult to understand the truth of Gods creation. In comparison between these stories is that God created the Earth like human kind, but in different ways. The most important similarity is that God shows humans complete love and adornment and only gives them one strict measure not eat from the Tree of Knowledge in the Garden of Eden. But they do not obey him, and they eat from it anyway. Before the mankind comes, Genesis I have a lot of events such as firmament, waters, plants and animals. Meanwhile, in Genesis two the preparation for mans home was really emphatic and special planning upon human. There different emphases in the two storiesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦., but the reason for these is obvious. Genesis I continue the narrative of creation until the climax, namely, man made in the image and likeliness of God. In Genesis II gives certain added details about mans original condition, which would have been incongruous and out of place in the grand, declarative in Genesis I(Edward J. Young, 1960).Therefore in Genesis II the center of this creation was human, it involves his setting and how perfect God created him. And at the same time in Genesis II there is no mention of creation of Earth and Oceans. There is no allusion to the sun, moon. The main purpose of this creation is to show how man was developing around the Earth. In contrast Genesis I explain us a general conclusion of this creation that have lastly a human without any details that involves him. Therefore, it show a man which was created without any main goal, this story basically describe an important care of environment as plants and nature. Moreover, Genesis I the creation of human takes place on the sixth day and is as follows, And God said, Let us make man in our image, in our likeness. As a result God created man in his image and also male and female.(Genesis 1:26) Be fertile an increase, fill the Earth and master it. The story of Adam and Eve portrays them as the two characters that did not have enough understanding of the effects of disobedience would bring to their lives and their next generations. In comparison, there is another similarity is that in the first account, there was a pre-existing watery chaos. The ocean was already present and a wind moved across the surface. The seas rested on the dry land , which appeared on day 3 when God gathered the waters together.(Genesis 1:1 to 2:4). The second story says that there was pre-existing dry land.AT first God created Adam, and then began to create all other living things. As a result God before created human being, he had made the water around the world. In version Ps God was the creator, there was no mention of laws and redeeming, how this God had made everything and was omniscient. This contrast from the Ps vision God, the evidence of this is found in Genesis II , where J explain, You shall no eat from it and you shall not touch it, lest you died. (Genesis 3:3) In this case it is referring to the tree of Knowledge, in the Garden of Eden. This shows evidence that Js God was the lawgiver and judgment giver. When comparing this to Ps God, we can observe that Js God was not as all knowledge. In Js vision found this disobedience from Adam and Eve, thats why he started the judgment. It is in this aspect that Js God is not omniscient. Another big contrast as we can see in Genesis II, God require materials to make Earth. This is opposed to how God is making Earth in Genesis I. in genesis I, the earth could bring forth vegetation, in Genesis II, there is no vegetation without rain and tillage of the ground by man; God has plant the first garden himself (Wybrow, 138) So, it demonstrates the difference in the Earth process to be set up. Furthermore, another difference is that in genesis I God doesnt have a very clear characterization because God was more a powerful and omniscient being. While in Genesis II God was less powerful, simply because it could not just imagine something into creation. The best way to reconcile the accounts was to assume that in the six days of creation, God created the potential for everything that unfolded, so that the potentiality for humanity was created on the sixth day, and this potentiality then became actual when activated by the breath of God. So it avoids contradictions between the two stories. It is a really interesting text which could be connected with the evolution.(Augustine of Hippo).Therefore in real life both stories are based with a same purpose, created the man and environment around him, but both creations did it at his own style. How sensitive the topic of cosmetic surgery is, differs by culture. South Koreans now widely accept plastic surgery as a part of their culture. This movement has sparked widespread criticism from people around the world. Many people either can't comprehend the idea, can't get past the cultural barrier, or can't accept the adequate reasoning behind it.However, the reasoning is quite imple and should be accepted universally; Personal satisfaction and happiness are important factors to one's well-being, and if improving one's appearance can critically boost one's self-esteem, then taking advantage of the technologies we have today like plastic surgery should be an acceptable option to remedy low self-worth and low self- esteem. Every culture has some different idea of what is considered beautiful. In the past when people lived in less diverse-looking societies, the standards of beauty typically were defined by features that weren't common amongst their own ommunity.As time flowed, certain places became more ethnically and culturally diverse than others, and in those places ideas clashed and standards changed, resulting in a more open community with ideal beauty being more subjective. However, there are places that still aren't so diverse. In these places, the conception of what is considered ideal beauty is more predominantly accepted and can be linked heavily to historical and cultural roots as well as how influential and persistent the media is in that particular society.Although South Korea has been experiencing esternization since the Korean War, the country is still a generally homogenous nation, meaning that the demographics are still mostly Korean. South Korea is a country where the old meets the new and where traditions go hand in hand with modern ideas and technology; this goes for beauty as well. In ancient South Korea, having certain features could define not only ones ancestral past, but also ones future.In an article explaining the marriage of cosmetic surgery and ancient customs, Lee Su Hyun explains that, â€Å"Physiognomy, or the art of face reading, has een practiced for centuries in Korea – as well as in other Asian countries – as a way of divining a person's future† (Lee par. 8). In addition she proposed that, â€Å"Koreans also believe that personality is reflected in a person's facial features and that they [their facial features] are shaped by fate, genes and lifestyle† (Lee par. 9). This belief still persists today and many Koreans experience social pressures because of it.A South Korean mother explains that her daughter, Lee Min-Kyong, a 12 year old ballet dancer, lacks confidence: â€Å"Everyone, she says, points out her small eyes. It's why she doesn't think she's a pretty girl† (La h par. 3). Her mother added, â€Å"I'm having her do it pretty to get ahead† (qtd. in Lah par. 7). Although her daughter didn't ask for the surgery, Min-Kyong is looking forward to it: â€Å"I'm excited. I think I'll look better than I do now,' she says shyly, breaking into a small smile† (Lah par. 5).Foreigners may consider these social pressures to be offensive and superficial, but to South Koreans they are not; these pressures are Just another everyday-custom. Korean media, especially the Korean pop (K-pop) scene, has also been shaped by these social ressures which state that beauty is important. In K-pop, the most successful and famous idols perfectly fit what Koreans consider beautiful, near perfection. These idols are a part of every aspect of the media because of that. Unlike the western counterpart in which he or she is known for what he or she does best, a single Korean idol can be known to partake in a multitude of positions.It is very common to find a single idol being an actor or actress, a model, a musician, a singer, a dancer, a show host, a reality show celebrity, and a comedian. They are the role models of ociety, and, as a country where there is a pressure to look beautiful, many younger South Koreans enw and aspire to their features: â€Å"They all have small faces, large eyes, and tiny button noses. Chins are pointed, cheeks are wide, and their faces glow artificially, imbuing them with the anime quality' (Stone par. 15). Sure those features flaunted perfection, but there was a catch; those features aren't commonly or traditionally Korean.As revealed by netizens, this beauty was the work of plastic surgery. South Korea is very technologically advanced and â€Å"is the most wired in the orld, with the highest rate of smartphone usage 67 percent and 95 percent of Korean homes having internet access† (Stone par. 23). He clarifies that, â€Å"Wide-screen and high definition TV put pressure on hem [celebrities] to look good in close-ups, and with the Internet, where people like to post ‘before' and ‘after' pictures, they can no longer hide it [having undergone plastic surgery]. So they go public, often talking proudly about it on TV† (Choe par. 8). Although â€Å"before the K-pop boom Korean youth already were being brought up on a diet of surgery â€Å"(Stone par. 21), Dr.Park Sang-hoon, head of ID Hospital, notes that ordinary South Koreans are now more open about the idea because their idols are open about it: â€Å"It used to be all hush-hush when mothers brought their daughters in or a face-lift be fore taking them to match-makers, now young women go plastic surgery shopping around here† (Choe par. 10). This shift towards a nation-wide open-mindedness for plastic surgery relieved many South Koreans. However, what was a relief within the country, sparked ethnocentric criticism from the international audience.Today in South Korea, cosmetic surgery is a social norm: â€Å"South Koreans have more plastic surgery than any other nation according to figures released in January. Those in the Asian country have more treatments per members of the population, with one in every 77 turning to the knife or needle† (Nolan Par. 2). One thing that seemed to bother a lot of critics was not only that statistic but also what Koreans were getting done, which in many articles regarding the matter is western. This idea seems absolutely outrageous, false, and offensive to many people especially of Asian descent.Dr. Joo Kwon, head of JK Plastic Surgery Clinic, and Dr. Kwon Seung-Taik, a p lastic surgeon at Seoul National University Hospital, both agree: â€Å"While critics often argue that Koreans are adopting a more Western ideal of beauty, both Kwon and Joo disagree, saying that the standards are universal† (Kim par. 1). Kwon supports his position, mentioning something he read a while back, † Two love letters,' he says, Written 5,000 years ago, from China and Greece, respectively, both describe their lover as beautiful, with a pointed nose and large eyes† (qtd. n Kim par. 43). He also said, in defense, â€Å"We have Westerners coming in to cut down their nose to a smaller size does that mean they want to look Asian† (qtd. in Kim par. 44)? If one were to look at the before and after pictures in detail of Asians that have undergone cosmetic surgery, one can effortlessly notice that the features don't esemble any specific features only Westerners or Caucasians have nor are they any particularly non-Asian. What emerged from this stalemate didn 't do the situation justice, though.What all this type of criticism came down to was Just the obscuring of what mattered the most, how alleviated the patients were after undergoing their surgery. Although Min-kyung was only 12 years old and didn't make the decision herself to get the surgery, â€Å"for Min-Kyung, the 20-minute surgery has been well worth the cost and post-surgical discomfort. A few weeks later, she and her mother email to ay she's happy with her new look. And when this 12-year old stares at herself dancing in the studio, she no longer Just sees her eyes. She sees a prettier girl† (Lah par. 17).Especially at that age, confidence is very important. With Just that minor surgery, her increase in confidence, even if increased by Just the slightest bit, will help her progress not only through her difficult teenage years but also thereafter. In another article, which criticizes the shift towards the acceptance for plastic surgery in South Korea and explains the supp osed dangers associated with that shift, a omen's experience is shared: â€Å"Chang Hae-Jin, 21 , an art student who was self- conscious about her slightly protruding teeth and chin decided to take that risk with Dr. Park.

When children are forced to grow up fast at a young age due to traumatic events, it shapes them into fighters, when faced with life and death a person would do almost anything to assure survival. This is greatly demonstrated in the book The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins when the main character Katniss Everdeen’s world is shifted upside down when her father dies and when she volunteers as tribute for the Hunger Games. After her father’s death the weight of the world was on Katniss’s shoulders, as she had to learn how to provide for, and keep her family alive. Her family consisted of her mother, who suffered severe depression after the death of her husband, and her younger sister Prim who meant the world to her. She inherited hunting†¦show more content†¦Lastly, Katniss volunteered to take her sisters place in the hunger games when Prim’s name was pulled at the reaping. She could not stand the thought of her sister being thrown into such an awful situation and she did the only thing she could to save her life. Fighting for others when they were too weak to fight for themselves was another characteristic that Katniss demonstrated throughout the novel. This was displayed in many cases. One way in which this was portrayed was when Katniss immediately without giving a thought to the matter decided to enroll herself in the hunger games in order to ensure Prim’s safety as well as to save her the terror of the despicable games. â€Å"With one sweep of my arm, I push her behind me. I volunteer! I gasped. I volunteer as tribute!†(Collins 22). This showed how Katniss stood up for her sister and fought for her when no one else would, she saved Prim’s life and she risked it all for her. Katniss also took care of and risked much for Peeta when he was injured. As soon as it was announced that two people could win the hunger games if they were from the same district Katniss immediately made it her priority to find Peet a. She wanted to do everything in her power to assure his survival. When Katniss did find Peeta he was badly injured and she spent much time and effort in making him better.
